Coltrane Peak Walkthrough — Snow Mountain & Frozen Trainyard

updated 2026-05-31· patch 1.0.0

Coltrane Peak is the first progression-gated region — it opens after the four any-order Generators clear. The biome is a snow mountain with a frozen trainyard interior; wiki.gg refers to it as Frozen Trainyard, but the mainstream SEO term across GameSpot and hollower.org is Coltrane Peak (we use the latter). Two main bosses anchor the region: the Icebound Cavern boss (a frost-crown humanoid the community sometimes calls Frozen Horror) and Locomotress Agnes, the train-themed back-end boss. Mirren is the region's secret boss.

FACT-CHECK ANCHOR Region layout, boss arenas and the frozen-trainyard interior are fact-checked against in-clip room geometry from the Indie James full-game longplay (youtube.com/watch?v=LoKnf0E1nUg) and the BeardBear 100% walkthrough (youtube.com/watch?v=UcumKfQxy3U). The Icebound Cavern boss true canonical name is still pending wiki.gg cross-check (see Open content TODOs below).

Entry path from Ossex (after four-any-order clear)

Coltrane Peak's gate does not appear on the Ossex hub map until the four any-order Generators all clear. Once the progression flag trips, a new exit opens — the snow-mountain road. Visible at Indie James t≈8:30:00: blue-and-white ice tiles, snow-textured stone bridges, frost-cyan train rails cutting through the floor pattern.

The early route through Coltrane Peak teaches the cold-traversal mechanics:

  1. Ice tiles slide. Sliding floor tiles change the dash rhythm — Mina drifts further per dash. Plan landings on stone tiles between ice patches.
  2. Frost-doll enemies summon from snow piles. The Icebound Cavern boss telegraphs this mechanic; small frost-dolls slow Mina on contact.
  3. Train rails are not safe. The rails on the floor pattern are the trainyard's traversal feature — Locomotress Agnes uses them as a wheel-spark attack lane.

Major landmarks

Snow-mountain summit (Indie James t≈8:30:00). Ice-tile floor with snow-piled walls. The first save shrine sits on a stone island in the middle of the sliding-ice expanse.

Frozen Trainyard interior (Indie James t≈9:00:00 shows pipe networks and ice-block puzzles in the trainyard interior). Pipe networks, ice-block puzzles, train-rail floor lines. Locomotress Agnes lives at the end of this segment.

Icebound Cavern. The boss arena for the Icebound Cavern boss. Frost-cyan stone walls with crystalline overhang; the in-room nameplate on the cavern entrance flags this as a boss zone.

Mirren shrine — the secret-boss trigger location. The Mirren fight is gated behind a side-room sequence inside Coltrane Peak (TODO: specific trigger sequence still pending — see Secret bosses hub).

Save shrines & fast travel

Confirmed shrines in Coltrane Peak from the source clips:

  • Summit shrine — at the top of the snow-mountain entry.
  • Pre-Icebound Cavern shrine — before the Icebound Cavern boss trigger.
  • Trainyard mid-shrine — between the two main bosses.
  • Pre-Locomotress Agnes shrine — final shrine before the Agnes fight.

The regional fast-travel beacon activates after the Locomotress Agnes kill + Spark Generator activation (Spark is built into the post-Agnes exit on Coltrane Peak — no separate tower climb).

Collectibles in Coltrane Peak

Observed pickups on the source clips:

  • Bonestone Gems — multiple visible inside the trainyard piping network. The dig mechanic gates one cache behind an ore vein.
  • Trinkets — at least 2 trinkets land inside the Coltrane Peak route on the 100% pace. The roster is on the /trinkets/ P3 page.
  • Frost-resistance trinket — community guides reference a Coltrane-specific cold-resistance trinket pickup as a quality-of-life recommendation. TODO: needs name + slot confirmation.
  • Save-shrine candles — 4 shrines confirmed (see above).

CONTENT IN PROGRESS Specific trinket IDs, the Mirren secret-boss trigger location, and the precise frost-doll spawn map are deferred to the next content pass. Coltrane Peak's 100% pace has 8-12 collectibles total per the Bone Beach pattern; precise locations need a second pass.

Bosses encountered in Coltrane Peak

BOSS · COLTRANE-PEAK

Icebound Cavern boss

Icebound Cavern boss arena — vertical three-lane ice cavern, Mina at top-left, small blue figure at right edge, icicle ceiling visible. Compilation t=42:23.
NOTESColtrane Peak first major encounter. Vertical ice-cavern arena with three lanes (blue-stripe left + central ice-path + blue-stripe right) and red icicle hazards along the ceiling. The boss is a small blue mage-like figure with white-flame magic. Boss segment opens at compilation t=42:23 and runs through t=44:24 — shorter than most main bosses.

Icebound Cavern boss — the frost-crown humanoid

The first main boss in Coltrane Peak. Three attacks: an ice-shard drop from the cavern ceiling, a frost-doll summon that adds pressure pieces to the arena, and a vertical-lane hazard that telegraphs the safe lane between drops.

The boss's canonical name is still pending wiki.gg lookup — the room nameplate inside the source clip says "Icebound Cavern" but the boss banner has not been OCR'd clearly. Mainstream SEO clusters around "Frozen Horror"; we are not committing to that name until wiki.gg publishes the official one.

Locomotress Agnes — the train-themed back-end boss

BOSS · COLTRANE-PEAK

Locomotress Agnes

Locomotress Agnes establishing — green locomotive boss with yellow eye-headlights, Mina rides centre-top, green orb projectile rising on the right, snowy night sky with mountains. Compilation t=47:19.
NOTESColtrane Peak cap boss. The arena is the top of Locomotress Agnes herself — a moving green locomotive boss with yellow eye-headlights, side wheels, and a stack/funnel that lobs skull projectiles. The fight plays out on the train's roof as it moves through the snowy Coltrane night, with mountain silhouettes in the background. The arena floor has limited horizontal space; over-dashing off the side rails is a one-shot.

Locomotress Agnes is the harder of the Coltrane Peak fights. Three attacks: a skull toss that arcs across the rail-floor lanes, wheel sparks that turn the rail lines into a damage zone, and an eye-beam sweep that the boss uses as a positional reset.

Mirren — the region's secret boss

Mirren is gated behind a side-room trigger inside Coltrane Peak. The exact trigger location is pending verification — possibly tied to a specific NPC dialogue or a hidden frost-doll path. See Secret bosses hub for the current Mirren entry.

Coltrane Peak has no tower climb

Coltrane Peak is not one of the three tower-climb regions. Its Spark Generator activation is built into the post-Locomotress-Agnes exit. The three tower-climb regions are Queensbury Crypt, Nox's Bayou, and Astral Orrery.

Region atmosphere & narrative framing

Coltrane Peak's framing is "winter on the line" — the region is a snow mountain on the train route, and the in-game refers to the interior sub-area as the Frozen Trainyard. Visual cues converge on that framing throughout the run: blue-and-white ice tiles for the entry summit, frost-cyan train rails cutting through the floor pattern, pipe networks and ice-block puzzles inside the Trainyard, and finally the boss arena on top of Locomotress Agnes herself as the train rolls through the snowy night.

The region is the campaign's first progression-gated Generator — meaning the gate opens only when the four any-order regions (Queensbury Crypt, Septemburg, Nox's Bayou, Bone Beach) all clear. The pacing implication: by the time Mina arrives, she has the disciplined dash budget + the trinket loadout + the weapon swap options that the any-order regions taught. The Icebound Cavern boss

  • Locomotress Agnes are designed against a player with that toolkit, not against a blind first-region pace.

Narrative-wise, Coltrane Peak does not anchor a major NPC dialogue thread. The Thorne phase 2 fight happens here partially — the train-car interior segment of Thorne phase 2 is on a Coltrane-themed locomotive — but the dialogue beats are framed as Thorne's words from the campaign-spanning chase, not as region-resident NPC dialogue. Mirren's framing as the region's secret boss (rabbit-form, with hidden trigger) is the closest the region gets to a non-boss narrative beat.

Enemy roster

Observable on the source clips:

  • Snow-piled basic enemies along the entry summit — small white-furred patrol enemies that emerge from snow piles. One weapon hit each; their hitboxes are tight but their movement is slow.
  • Frost-doll minions spawn during the Icebound Cavern boss fight and persist briefly into the post-boss corridor. Same one-hit kill rule as the snow-pile patrols.
  • Trainyard caster — blue-glowing turret-style enemies along the Frozen Trainyard pipe networks. They fire homing ice-bolt projectiles down the walkway; sweep them with a weapon swing during their cast wind-up.
  • Slip-floor hazard enemies — the side-stripe lanes inside the Icebound Cavern arena occasionally drop a slippery enemy variant whose dash distance is amplified by the floor. Treat these as positional bait, not as immediate threats.

The roster is smaller than Septemburg or Bone Beach because the region's puzzle interior dominates the traversal pacing. Most enemy clearance happens incidentally rather than as a focused combat segment.

Hidden / optional content

  • Mirren secret boss. Gated behind a side-room trigger inside Coltrane Peak. Specific trigger location is pending verification — possibly tied to a frost-doll path or a specific NPC dialogue. See Secret bosses hub for the current Mirren entry.
  • Frost-resistance trinket pickup. Community guides reference a Coltrane-specific cold-resistance trinket as a quality-of-life recommendation. The exact slot is pending verification but the pickup is in the region's collectible chest cluster.
  • Trainyard pipe shortcuts. The Frozen Trainyard's pipe network has dig-prompt shortcuts that reduce the puzzle-solve time. These don't gate progression but they speed up 100% pace.
  • Sub-cavern hidden chests. The Icebound Cavern arena has at least one chest visible on the south wall that opens only after the boss kill. Sweep on the way out.

Save shrine optimisation

For first-run pacing: rest at the summit shrine, sweep up the collectibles along the entry summit, rest at the pre-Icebound Cavern shrine before the first boss, then push to the trainyard mid-shrine after the kill. Rest again before Locomotress Agnes.

For 100% pace: bias toward the trainyard mid-shrine for the collectible loop — the dig-prompt shortcuts inside the pipe network are closest to that shrine. The summit shrine is the fast-travel anchor once the regional beacon unlocks.

Backtrack rewards (post-final-boss)

After the Locomotress Agnes kill the Spark Generator beacon activates and Coltrane Peak's fast-travel beacon comes online. Returning to the region with NG+'s mirror-world overlay reveals mirror-world-only chests inside the Trainyard — current source clips don't capture these; pending NG+ verification.

The Mirren secret boss can be triggered on any return visit, gating doesn't reset.

Frequently asked

When does Coltrane Peak open? After the four any-order Generators clear. The Ossex hub map will show the snow-mountain gate on the next return visit.

Is the Icebound Cavern boss the same as Frozen Horror? Open question. The room nameplate inside the source clip says "Icebound Cavern" but the boss banner has not been clearly OCR'd. Community clusters around "Frozen Horror" as the SEO term; wiki.gg has not yet published the canonical name.

Where is Mirren? Hidden side-room trigger inside Coltrane Peak. Exact location pending verification. See Secret bosses hub.

Does Coltrane Peak have a tower climb? No. The Spark Generator activation is built into the post-Agnes exit.

Will I freeze in the snow tiles? No. Coltrane Peak does not implement a per-tile cold-damage mechanic; the slippery ice tiles are the only floor-material gimmick.

What's the next region? Astral Orrery — the final progression-gated region.

Where this chains to

Once Coltrane Peak's Spark Generator activates, the final region opens:

  • Astral Orrery — the final progression-gated region. Mirror-entry mechanic. Lionel ends the campaign here. The Astral Orrery walkthrough chains directly into the Endings hub.
